HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
President Obama accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for president Thursday night.
He was greeted by cheers of "four more years!"
He addressed the delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
The President said the choice voters will face won't be just between two candidates but between two different paths for the nation.
The President also spelled out his goals, including new jobs and reducing the deficit.
Many gathered in the Valley to watch the president speak.
Madison County democrats had planned to watch the festivities from their headquarters, but there was so much enthusiasm they had to move to a downtown bar, Amendment XXI, to handle the crowds.
And the excitement from the convention was contagious for newbies and veterans alike.
"It looks great, compared to what we heard last week," said Ester Davis.
Davis said this entire convention has been inspiring and she's been working on presidential campaigns since she was passing out literature for the Kennedy campaign in 1960.
She joined an enthusiastic crowd to pack the house to watch Thursday night's events from Amendment XXI downtown.
She's been awed by President Obama, and happy to hear him invoke the memory of President Franklin Roosevelt.
"I remember Franklin. I hate to admit it," she said. "…He was the beginning of so many pieces of social legislation."
"I loved watching every minute of it," said Amy Shadoin.
Shadoin has never been politically active before this year, but she too has been inspired - even as the President said what's ahead is not going to be easy.
"I think we need hard truths. 20 years ago we heard 'stay the course.' Well, it's time to stay the course," she said.
The democrats' party faithfully said they feel a strong energy that even in red state Alabama there's lots of work to do.
Leading democrats said they've been surprised by the enthusiasm they've seen among their fellow democrats as this fall's election season heats up.
