LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
An 8-month-old baby was rushed to the hospital after his mother found him face down in the bath tub at a home on Thatch Road near Elkmont.
Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said the mother, Brittney McCluskey, was bathing the child along with a two-year-old. She left the children to check the oven, and when she came back, the baby, Kaden McCluskey, was face down and not breathing.
McCluskey attempted to get Kaden to breathe again, but could not. She ran outside with the child and was able to get the attention of two women driving by the house.
The women, employees at Huntsville Hospital, but not nurses, said Kaden was blue and not breathing when they stopped to help. They began CPR and the baby began breathing again.
The Limestone County Sheriff and Oak Grove/Thatch Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
The child was flown to Huntsville Hospital where he is said to be in good condition.
The two women who helped saved his life spoke about what happened.
Debbie Clark and Gaylia Luna said this was the scariest situation they've ever been in.
They said they couldn't have imagined what would have happened if they weren't in the right place at the right time to save the child's life.
"He was blue around the mouth, not breathing, limp and that's when I knew he was in trouble," said Luna.
She is still emotional after what she and her friend experienced Wednesday afternoon.
Luna and Clark were on their way to Birmingham and happened to see McCluskey run out in the street.
"It was a mama, and she was waving her hand trying to flag somebody down, and she looked scared so we stopped," said Clark. "She was upset and she hollered that 'my baby is not breathing.'"
Luna said fluid came out and they started doing CPR.
Luna used to work at Huntsville Hospital as a cardio tech.
Both Luna and Clark said they've never done CPR before; they only knew what they've seen doctors do.
"We just started to do what we see them doing all the time," said Clark.
"Working here for 20 years, it just kind of kicked in and we knew this baby needed help," said Luna.
Luna said after six or seven breaths, they got a response from Kaden.
"There have been three wonderful cries I've ever heard in my life: two were from my children and the other was from him," Luna said.
The two now believe they were running late for a reason.
"If we had gone on the time we were supposed to, we would not have been there, and that's just divine intervention, I guess," said Luna.
Luna and Clark said they've never taken Thatch Road before, but are glad they did on Wednesday.
They said they don't consider themselves heroes; they were just doing what anyone else would have done in a time of need.
