AL ACT score results suggest lack of college readiness

A new report indicates only a small percentage of high school graduates in Alabama met key benchmarks in college readiness.

The Condition of College Career and Readiness report compared students' 2012 ACT scores with how well they would do in college-level courses.

It showed only 18 percent of students in Alabama are prepared in benchmark subjects of reading, English, math, and science. The figure falls just below the national average of 25 percent.

Alabama Department of Education representative Mary Scott Hunter (R-8th District) said she is not surprised by the results. She said teachers, parents, and students need to take them seriously.

"We do well in many areas in education. I don't want this one report to reflect everything about education in Alabama. We have a strong system and that's a wonderful thing because we can grow. But the fact is, we do have to work on achievement," Hunter said.

Scott said focusing fundamental subjects like reading and math is more effective in improving higher test scores and college readiness than enrolling in private prep classes.

"Prep classes are like just-in-time training. If you have a place to jump off from, if you have the academic basis to do just-in-time-training, they're valuable. But if you don't have the basics, then no, it has no value," she said.

Hunter said it's also important for parents to be involved in their child's education at an early age.

Past college readiness studies have shown that high school students who reach the ACT's college readiness benchmarks tend to attend four-year colleges.
