HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
City leaders across North Alabama met Tuesday to canvass the results of the municipal elections.
Voters elected mayors, city leaders and school board members last Tuesday.
Those results were canvassed and certified on Tuesday, September 4.
Huntsville City Clerk Charles Haygood said the process is state law.
"Each precinct supplies us with a canvas for that precinct. Council president opens envelopes to read off to myself and an assistant, as to the number of votes each candidate gets. When we get through, we add them all up, and that is the result of the election precinct," said Haygood.
Provisional ballots were also counted today before the votes were certified.
The city of Florence will officially be under new leadership this fall.
Tuesday, the city certified the votes from last Tuesday's municipal election, and the final numbers were then presented to the city council for approval.
Mickey Haddock won the mayor's race with a final count of 50.48 percent of the vote.
Haddock defeated former police chief Rick Singleton and two others.
There will only be one runoff in Florence, and that's for the City Council Seat for District 5.
Coy Bramlett will face off against Blake Edwards on October 9.
The newly elected officials will assume their new duties on the first Monday in November.
