HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The driver of the SUV who crashed into an oncoming car on I-565 Monday had a medical issue while driving, according to police.

Investigators say 59-year-old Marion Johnson III of Montgomery was driving a 2005 Lexus SUV when he had a medical issue and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes of I-565 Monday morning. His vehicle hit a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage head-on.

The driver of the Mirage was killed on impact. Johnson and his wife, Cynthia, were taken to Huntsville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have not identified the driver of the Mirage because his family is in another country and cannot be reached. He was transporting blood to Huntsville and Crestwood hospitals for the Red Cross, according to investigators.

Traffic was backed up on the interstate for several miles as crews worked to clean up the scene.
