BIRMINGHAM, AL (WAFF) -

An endangered species of bird was hatched at the Birmingham Zoo for the first time ever.

The zoo welcomed a baby kori bustard chick. The bird is a threatened species of bird and the Birmingham Zoo is one of only 10 zoos in the country to hatch a kori bustard in the last 20 years.

The state-of-the-art Grumbach incubator was provided by the Kori Bustard Species Survival Plan.

The chick, named Kobu, weighs in at just over six pounds and will reach 40 pounds by adulthood.
