ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks may have been the incumbent entering Tuesday's election, but this is actually the first time Marks has been elected Mayor.
As city council president, Marks assumed the mayor position when former mayor Dan Williams won a state house seat in 2010. Marks said it means even more to his knowing, this time, the people of Athens chose him.
Marks won the race with 77 percent of the vote, a total of 2.247 votes. J. Bradley Horney received 389; Jerry Hill received 270, and Ralph Richardson received 29.
"We've got a great team. We got hammered these last 20 months with storms and a lot of other things, but I tell you, this group had worked together. We have a good working relationship. Great community. I'm proud to serve. And I'm so excited about these next four years. We've got to get to work tomorrow morning. So I'm looking forward to it," said Marks.
Marks said he's looking forward to pushing ahead with the city council to do the city's business.
