HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
HEMSI officials are making the trip toward the coast to help in the cleanup and recovery effort after Hurricane Isaac makes landfall.
Nine paramedics and two ambulances left Huntsville traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana Tuesday. FEMA contacted HEMSI asking for the resources.
The crew could be assigned to a search and rescue team or evacuate hospitals that already haven't been evacuated and are in Hurricane Isaac's path.
FEMA has called for at least 80 ambulances to help. HEMSI said their crew is experienced and know how to handle the situation as the hurricane hits the land.
However; they'll probably start work well before that time.
"A lot of people say why did we just send two of them? We still have to take care of Madison County. We don't know if we may get some severe weather off of this and we need to take care of our citizens," Don Webster, HEMSI Director.
HEMSI officials said this is the first time they've been deployed in the last two and a half years.
