HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Today people throughout the Tennessee Valley head to the polls to elect their local leaders.
The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will not be turned away and will get a chance to vote.
In order to cast your ballot, you must have a proper form of identification with you.
A driver's license is preferable, but there are more than 20 other types of I.D. accepted at the polls.
Election officials also, want voters to be aware of some changes this year.
They are reminding people to check their precincts and districts to find out where they should vote because some of those district lines have changed.
"Because of the way the council re-drew the district lines and the county commission re-drew the precinct lines, there may be some confusion on where people should vote." said Chuck Hagood, Treasurer and Clerk for the City of Huntsville. "They need to find out where they go vote first."
Knowing this ahead of time will help cut back on crowded polling locations, unnecessary waiting, and confusion.
To find out if your district has changed, you can visit the Alabama Secretary of State's web site, which has the phone numbers of every county election office.
Madison County allows voters to check that information on this web site.
You can also call the Madison County Board of Registrars at (256) 532-3510.
