HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Dahlia VanWinkle first came to Dr. Ly's Natural Health Institute in Huntsville in late January.
"...My migraine headaches! I've been experiencing since I was 8 years old," said VanWinkle.
She said the headaches were debilitating.
"I received relief after my second and third visit. I could tell they were progressively getting better," she said.
She said her body felt so much better, she continues her visits. She said depending on the pain and the problem, she has had as many as 40 needles in her at one time.
"It isn't a puncturing that you feel. It isn't even a paper cut. You really don't notice. The only time you experience any type of feeling is when you're tender to the area," she explained.
She said she used to dread doctor visits where needles were involved.
"…So instead of it turning into a painful puncture, it's more of a relief - so it's the complete opposite," said VanWinkle.
Dr. Ly is a doctor of Chinese medicine. He's also an Auburn grad with degrees in biochemistry and science. He describes acupuncture as a traditional Chinese healing art.
"It helps body to balance, to harmony, and not to be toxic," said Ly.
Acupuncture, he said, can be likened to a computer that must be reset. There are many reasons people go there for his help.
"A lot of patients come here to lose weight," he said.
Acupuncture is often used to treat pain. Some people come for help with organ problems in the pancreas or liver. Others with ailments like Lupus, Fibromyalgia or joint pain.
"I have a lot of Lupus patients here. Lupus is also auto immune system problem."
Acupressure is also practiced there.
Anyone familiar with Chinese medicine would probably recognize the traditional herbs. In this day and time, most people just take them by pill.
Whether it's herbs, acupressure, or acupuncture, Dr. Ly's patient list is long in his clinics in Huntsville, Memphis and the Shoals. And his patients like Dahlia keep coming back.
