To the relief of parents and the chagrin of students, we've wrapped up another summer break. As Valley students start another school year, a lot of things are different. A new high school, new laptops, but most of all, a new statewide ban on texting while driving. I know I've seen people violating this ban and I wouldn't be surprised if you have, too. But now we have children walking to school and busses to share the roads with. Put the phone down and share them safely. There's one other back to school issue I'd like to discuss this week. As local students hit the books, many of them will also hit the playing fields. I believe that athletics play an important role in the development of young men and women and they deserve our support. What they don't deserve are parents living vicariously through their children and displaying bad sportsmanship when things don't go their way. The athletes are there to build character and learn the value of sportsmanship. Let's keep that in mind this year and show the referees, opposing teams and their fans proper respect. I'm Vanessa Oubre and that's my take. What's yours?
