HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville's marquee tourist attraction, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, is blasting its way into the black after years of losing money.

The breakthrough was unveiled for the Center's board on Friday night.

The USSRC is Huntsville's big attraction, but it's also the top attraction for the entire state, and it's not something you want to see losing money year in and year out.

This year, the Center is reporting an operating profit for the first time in five years of struggling in the red.

CEO Deborah Barnhart said the Center's got all engines firing with its "Mammoths and Mastadons" exhibit.

Attendance is up three percent despite having gone down at museums around the country. Space Camp is up 17 percent.

There's been this summer's filming of the movie "Space Warriors" there as well.

Now the Rocket Center is looking to roll out a five year plan of new projects.

With its house in order, expect more big new things there, including Raytheon's "Math Alive" exhibition to open this fall.
