MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Two Alabama lawmakers want to give control back to individual school systems regarding the state-mandated school start date.

The official announcement is coming Monday.

This is pre-filed legislation and Madison senator Bill Holtzclaw is one of the driving forces behind this.

With school start dates just a few days away, this would not have any impact on the 2012 school year.

This new legislation would allow local school boards to opt out of mandatory school calendars set up by the state.

The current law bars districts from deciding when breaks and even the start of school will begin.

Legislators just passed this law last session.
