July unemployment up half a percent

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations reported a rise in unemployment from June.

Officials said July unemployment was 8.3 percent, up .5 percent from June. The number is .9 percent below July of 2011.

Officials said it is not unusual to see an increase in partial unemployment claims in July. They said the workforce also increased by 5,000.

Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby with 6 percent, Blount with 7.4 percent and Coffee with 7.5 percent.

Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox with 19.6 percent, Dallas with 17.8 percent and Lowndes with 16.7 percent.
