Alabama Democrats are deciding whether to replace perennial candidate Harry Lyon as their nominee for chief justice.
A party committee will hold a hearing Friday in Birmingham on whether to remove Lyon as the sole opponent of Republican Roy Moore. Party leaders would have to find a new nominee if they determine Lyon is unfit for the nomination.
Lyon has referred to homosexuals as "freaks" in online posts and once suggested killing a few illegal immigrants to scare others away from Alabama. The Pelham attorney has been disciplined three times by the Alabama State Bar, including once for pointing a shotgun at a neighbor and her children.
The state Democratic chairman ordered Lyon to explain why he should remain on the ballot.
Lyon calls the hearing his "political crucifixion."
