HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An overnight storm brought lots of heavy rain and lightning to North Alabama.

Storms rolled in around 1:00 a.m. About 400 lightning strikes hit the area during this time.

The storm caused some power outages in the Meridianville area and knocked over some trees into roadways.

The wet weather also made for some slick roads and caused several wrecks.

The rain is a good reminder for people to watch out for mosquitoes, which like to breed in puddles. West Nile Virus is on the rise once again. The U.S. is seeing the biggest spike in the virus since 2004.

There have been about 700 cases reported this year and 26 people have died from it. Four cases have popped up in Alabama.

Texas is the hardest hit state with 16 deaths this year from West Nile Virus. Dallas is under a State of Emergency, as crews work to spray the city with pesticides using planes.

There are no medications or vaccinations to treat the virus. People with mild cases tend to recover on their own without hospitalization.

Experts suggest staying away from areas where mosquitoes breed and using bug spray when outside.
