STEVENSON, AL (WAFF) -
Plans for a methadone clinic are under way in the Jackson County town of Stevenson.
But, some residents near the proposed facility said they had no idea it was being built.
Postings were put in the local paper and notifications were sent to public officials, but at least one resident who lives across the street from the center said she had no idea and doesn't want it there.
The location is 196 County Road 85 at the former Stevenson Medical Clinic, just off Highway 72 that runs through Stevenson. The facility will be called the Northeast Alabama Treatment Facility.
An attorney for the center said all of the proper notifications were done and the center obtained a needed certificate on May 3 of this year. Attorney Edward Wood said there is no certain time when the center will be open. He said they are still fulfilling state requirements at this time.
Wood said the center has been given a deadline of May 2, 2013, to fulfill the requirements, or else they will have to do the process over again.
A church sits next to the center, as well as several homes, and one nearby resident said she had no idea.
"I mean, it's good to help people but I don't know. That's close to home. It's kind of scary a little bit. It is," Carla Lansden said.
Attempts to reach Mayor Rickey Steele were unsuccessful.
