HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
One local organization is reaching out to help women improve their lives.
On Thursday, the Women's Economic Development Council Foundation recognized six community leaders at its 2012 Women Honoring Women event.
This year's theme was "Continuing the Promise."
The WHW program, co-sponsored by Crestwood Medical Center, is an annual fundraiser that has provided more than 90 deserving women with over $200,000 in scholarship money.
"Not only do we give scholarships; we do something unique as far as scholarship programs are concerned. We give them a mentor in the scholars field. If she is a nursing student, we look for a nurse that can help her and give her the process she needs to know to become a nurse - give her encouragement and support," said Janice Sanders, executive director of the WEDC.
The six women chosen were honored in their respective fields ranging from arts and humanities to education and technology.
