MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) -
Montgomery's police chief says the warden of the city jail has been reassigned after an investigation that found a degradation of safety protocols.
Chief Kevin Murphy held a news conference Tuesday to announce that warden James Carter had been reassigned to an administrative position.
The chief said the department is conducting the investigation with the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Marshals Service has temporarily removed 60 federal inmates from the jail.
Two correctional officers resigned July 31 and have been charged with promoting prison contraband. The chief said the department has begun termination proceedings against a third officer. Murphy said the safety of the jail in downtown Montgomery can't be left to chance.
