City emphasizes important voting dates

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

If you plan to vote in this month's election, there are some important dates to know.

August 17 is the deadline for voter registration or change of address. August 23 is the deadline to apply for absentee ballots.

The city of Huntsville and Madison County want voters to know important information on voting procedures, registration, absentee ballots and polling locations.

A number of new districts were adopted two years ago to reflect population shifts in the 2010 census. That means some existing precincts were split, eliminated or consolidated in Huntsville and Madison County.

"There have a been a lot of city council changes and polling place changes; our office has mailed out new cards if you are in that change," said Board of Registrars member, Lynda Hairston.

They also caution against waiting until the deadline to submit applications and requests.

"Ten days prior to an election in the state of Alabama, that application must be in our office or postmarked," said Hairston. "If you mail that letter late in the afternoon on Friday you are taking a chance that it's not going to be postmarked until the 18. If that's the case we cannot accept it."

All municipal elections in Alabama will take place on August 28.
