Role of Certified Athletic Trainer not just for football anymore

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Katie Valentine is a 10th grader on the Huntsville High School volleyball team. She's had a run of bad luck, breaking her foot twice.

"I broke the three middle metatarsus and Heather helped me do re-rehab the second time when I broke it," said Valentine.

Heather Aragon is in her fifth year as a certified athletic trainer for the Huntsville Hospital Sports Center. She said being there for every athlete in every sport is important.

They treat everything from concussions, to broken bones, to heat related illnesses. She also treated Katie.

"The first day of volleyball workouts, she actually fractured her foot again, so we sent her to an orthopedic surgeon," said Aragon.

Katie endured surgery and more rehab. By having someone like Heather on the sideline, Katie said it gave her a lot more confidence to be able to go out and play, and play hard.

"I was very glad to see her. She helped me a lot through things, and made sure I felt safer with her," added Valentine.

Katie is now back with her teammates and practicing.  And thanks to some extra, dedicated help, she's doing well.
