SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -
FBI agents and state authorities raided three pharmacies in the Shoals area Wednesday.
Agents were at Sheiffield Specialty Pharmacy where employees were ordered to leave. Agents also raided Franklin Pharmacy and Russellville Pharmacy, both in Russellville.
Agents arrived on the scene around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Sources close to the investigation said they are investigating possible healthcare fraud, but agents have said what exactly they were doing at the stores.
In a statement released late Wednesday night, lawyers for Franklin Pharmacy said the following:
"Representatives from various federal and Alabama agencies, including the FBI and the Alabama Attorney General's office, conducted a search at Franklin Pharmacy in Russellville, Alabama on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Franklin Pharmacy and its employees are cooperating fully with these authorities in their investigation. Franklin Pharmacy looks forward to a prompt conclusion to this investigation. Until further notice, Franklin Pharmacy will have no further comment."
Agents from the FBI, FDA, U.S. Health and Human Services, the Alabama Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Alabama Board of Pharmacy remained on the scene Wednesday evening.
