HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

School is less than two weeks away and many students have already began to stuff their back packs with pens, pads and pencils. Thanks to several local charities hosting back to school drives, kids will get some of those items for free.

This week, children of military families can get free materials through Operation Home Front. Families can get supplies at the American Legion Post on Highway 31 south in Decatur. The Dollar Tree stores in Decatur and Hartselle have donated school supplies for military families. Families can collect pens, paper, notebooks, calculators, for free, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In Huntsville, Free to Teach has partnered with Trinity United Methodist Church to host a back to school drive for children in need. School officials are asking people to donate pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue sticks and paper. City officials have said many teachers are spending up to a $1,000 every year just to help out.

Church leaders said they wanted to partner with the project to help give back.

"We want to help build the body, soul and mind of students around the city and especially in those areas where there are special needs. This is a great opportunity to do that, not only help the students but help the teachers who give themselves in their mission and ministry or serving children everywhere," Pastor Rick Owen said,"

Free to Teach also help run a resource store stocked with free teaching materials and classroom supplies in the Old West Huntsville Elementary school.
