LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Lawrence County High School has yet to begin repairs on storm
damage.
Classes start in two weeks, and officials are unsure if all the
damage will be fixed in time.
School officials said they hope the roof over
the school itself can be fixed in time, but there's a long way to go with the
gym.
Four weeks ago, storms ripped through Lawrence County, tearing the
roof off of the gym and damaging the science wing roof.
Superintendent Heath Grimes said they have bids in for contractors
to fix the school section. Work there could begin by the end of the week.
If they do not get the school fixed in time for classes, they are
prepared to move the kids to other classrooms if rain seeps in.
Principal Jean Howard said the damage to the roof gym is allowing rain to damage
the floor, and it's going to be a while before they get the gym fixed.
"I feel like it will take a year or more to repair the gym get a
gym back functioning here at Lawrence County High School," said Howard. "As far
as the other classrooms that were damaged, I feel it will be repaired and ready
the 20 of August when the students return to Lawrence County High."
PE classes and basketball practice will be moved to the coliseum
across the street. Volleyball games will be at Moulton Middle School.
