AYP: How Madison Co. schools fared

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Some schools are making strides when it comes to Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP.

Madison County Schools met most of their goals, but leaders say improvements in special education are needed. Last year, nine Madison County schools failed to meet AYP.

This year, superintendent David Copeland said the district made positive gains academically across the board, in spite of proration and decreased funding.

Only three schools, Hazel Green Elementary, Riverton Intermediate and Buckhorn Middle School, did not make AYP in the area of reading in special education.

"Our goal is to see that every student in Madison County meets his or her goal, and we will be working diligently to do so. We are striving to improve, and that is what we do day by day," said Dr. Copeland.

The state Department of Education will release complete AYP results Thursday. Schools that fail to make AYP two years in a row are placed on the state's list of schools needing improvement.
