HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The first double amputee made Olympic history this weekend by competing in the men's 400 meter race.  Oscar Pistorius, also known as blade runner, hit the track and took off in front of millions. Pistorius' race is a huge example of just how far prosthetics have come over the years.

Oscar Pistorius wowed millions as he sprinted in the 400 meter qualifying heat. The South African double amputee didn't qualify, but his attempt made history.  Inspiring amputees like Kim Duckett.

"The components that are out there now a days, he's fast," said Duckett.  "I've seen him run and he is really an inspiration not only to amputees but to everyone across the country."

Duckett works at Fourroux Prosthetics in Huntsville. He said he thought his life was over when he lost his leg in a motorcycle accident.

"I've been an amputee for more than 30 years," Duckett said. "The first one I had was the old wooden leg it was very heavy and weighed about 20lbs. It had a lot of medal in it. The one I have now is about 7.5lbs."

Duckett said that time and technology has allowed prosthetics to come a long way.
