Redstone Report: Redstone Arsenal Flying Club

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

One group of pilots at Redstone Arsenal flies purely for fun, not in fighter jets or Apaches, but in single engine planes.

Derek Romine, Maintenance Manager for Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation Flying Activity, sees the nearly 300 Redstone Arsenal Flying Club members transform when they climb into one of the club's 11 planes.

"Normally, when they come out here, they strip off their suits, and they put on their 'civi's,' and they're somebody else when they come out here," Romine said.

People who have access to Redstone, military and contractors alike, can join the club and take advantage of the flight program.

"They can go up with an instructor and actually fly the airplane," Romine said. "[Sometimes] they'll spend a whole day from 8:00 till almost dark to do that."

Romine keeps the fleet running in top shape. He said the program provides the freedom for people to enjoy time off from their stressful jobs.

"You can get from here to Destin in two hours... and have your toes in the sand before the sun goes down, and have eaten and everything," he said. "So, you and your family can enjoy a relaxing trip down and a relaxing trip coming back. You can do it in one day."
