CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

The Huntsville City school system will trade in their text books for laptops this fall; it's all a part of their digital switch.

The Cullman school system made the change years ago and teachers and students want to let teachers, parents and students in Huntsville know what to expect.

"It leveled the playing field for the kids because every learner had the tool that was needed," said East Elementary teacher Paige Raney.

Raney said it took a lot of teamwork when Cullman's school system went digital six years ago.

"We started and we figured out that we could help each other," she said. "Someone across the hall could learn something and comes and tells someone else and that's the best way to learn together."

Raney said since the switch, test scores in the school system have went through the roof and she credits the laptops for that increase. Students in the Cullman school system are happy with the change as well.  Will Raney is headed to the 9th grade. He said he's happy that he's saving paper and his back now that he doesn't use books as much.

"In 6th grade I carried around a lot of books and in 7th grade it was a relief because I started to stand up straight," he said. "I did 75 percent if not greater of my tests and my homework all on my laptop."

Huntsville City Schools will officially begin their digital switch when they start school on August 20.
