PELHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Some homeowners in Pelham say they had to evacuate their homes on Tuesday morning after storms brought in severe rains and flooding.
Homeowners say the waters rose to be thigh-high in the homes in the Saddle Run and Strafford Place subdivisions. Many in the neighborhood already had flood insurance due to the neighborhood's location.
One couple said they woke up when their 16-week baby began crying in the middle of the night. This alerted them to the water. They say the water pressure against the baby's door was so strong that the dad almost had to break down the door to get to the baby.
Pelham Mayor Don Murphy tells Fox6 that they have begun evacuating people to the Church of the Highlands. He is also prepared to open the civic center if it is needed. Firefighters have begun to canvass the neighborhood to ask residents if they would like to evacuate.
