ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

A cooling tower at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant sustained exterior damage in a weekend incident.

The damage to the cooling tower did not affect power output. The tower is half a mile away from the plant and does not involve any radiation.

TVA will now investigate to determine how the tower was damaged before repairing the wooden structure, which is one of six in operation at Browns Ferry.

The wooden cooling tower is used to cool river water before it is returned to the Tennessee River.

TVA built a seventh cooling tower over the summer that is made of composite materials.

TVA spokesman Ray Golden says the utility will issue a statement later in the day Monday on its website.
