TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -
A Tuscumbia man has been charged with assault after allegedly shooting his stepson.
Police responded to a shooting Thursday night. Officials said 44-year-old Phillip Foreman shot his 19-year-old son in the leg with a .22 caliber rifle.
Police said when they arrived on scene the teen was sitting on a curb with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The boy was taken to Helen Keller Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He was released from the hospital.
Police said the shooting happened around 7 Thursday night outside Foreman's home on East 5th Street.
According to reports, the stepfather and son got into some sort of argument.
Witnesses said the two were outside when Foreman went back inside and came out with a rifle, firing one round at his stepson.
"If they fire more than one round, you have to figure the round is going to keep going so, thankfully, this is only one shot and we know exactly where the round went. Had it been more shots we probably would've had more victims and it would've been a different scenario altogether, but with a shooting outside, it scares the whole public," said Detective Steven Higginbotham with Tuscumbia Police.
Foreman was charged with first degree domestic violence assault and discharging a firearm in the city limits. He is being held at the Tuscumbia Jail.
