MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 400,000 vehicles.
Officials said there's been dozens of complaints involving the accelerator in the Escape.
Ford said they plan to recall 421,000 of the SUV crossover across the U.S. They said the problem lies in the speed control cable which can get stuck and result in continued acceleration.
Only 2001 through 2004 models equipped with V6 engines and cruise control are being recalled.
Officials said the problem occurs when the gas is pressed almost all the way down. The cable gets stuck between the engine cover and a cruise control cover.
They said the problem can occur whether cruise control is activated or not. They said if it happens, the speed will not decelerate after the driver takes their foot off the gas.
Ford dealers said they will increase clearance around the engine cover to fix it. The recall is expected to begin August 6.
Escape owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 for more information.
