TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
A mother and her one-year-old baby are both in serious condition after being hit by a car early this morning in Tuscaloosa.
Investigators say around 12:33 a.m. this morning, the mother and her baby were hit on Culver Road near 32nd Street and the B.F. Goodrich Plant.
Tuscaloosa police say the woman driving a 1988 Cadillac Brougham ran out of gas and her car stopped on Culver Road facing northbound. She was taking her baby out of the backseat when a Chevrolet Silverado hit the back door of her car, injuring her and her baby. First responders said the mother is 20 years old.
The driver of the Silverado told police he saw the vehicle stalled in the road but could not stop in time. He says he tried to swerve to miss it, but his car struck the driver's side rear door and the woman, who was holding her child.
Sgt. Brent Blankley with Tuscaloosa Police says the driver got out of his car, found the woman and child in the ditch beside the road and called police. The mother and child were taken to DCH and are listed in serious condition.
"There were several bystanders on the scene. One person was actually treating the baby on scene and yeah, it seem like the quick reaction by bystanders and the driver who actually stopped probably helped the patients," Lt. Travis Parker with Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Service said.
The Tuscaloosa Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating, according to Blankley.
