HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Mayor Tommy Battle announced a plan for major roadway improvements on Zierdt Road starting in the fall.
Officials said the road will be expanded from two lanes to four lanes. The road will be expanded to include pedestrian, cyclist and vehicular traffic.
"We are finally bringing Zierdt Road into the norm of our major thoroughfares," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "Zierdt is a major corridor for traffic in and out of Redstone Arsenal, and it is a critical part of the infrastructure our community needs to support BRAC."
The project is estimated at more than $12 million. It will start at Madison Boulevard and end at Martin Road.
The plan was originally scheduled to begin in 2015, but officials said it cannot wait that long. The project will be done in phases to ensure a timely completion.
The first phase will be east side right of way clearing and Redstone Arsenal fence relocation.
