MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) -

Students in the shoals are taking part in a hands-on culinary experience to prepare them for careers in a culinary environment. This is the first class of its kind in northwest Alabama.

The cutting edge class was designed to help students prepare for the competitive world in culinary arts.

"We found in food service that's one of the only growing sectors of the economy overall as well as here in Alabama," said Chef Kevin Kilburn.

In just two weeks, Kilburn helped to perfect their knife skills. He said the 16-week program is more than just slicing and dicing.

"Things they need to do to prepare for life and this skill set as they prepare to go out into the workplace," said Kilburn.

"I don't know what I want to do I don't know what I'm good at so I'll take a stab at something," said Jaiden Green.

He said this class is helping him find a hidden talent.

"I've already been envisioning myself starting out working in a kitchen being a chef but I'll have to start off somewhere," said Green.

"Hopefully this will give them an entry level in a good food service environment somewhere institutional or a commercial application," said Kilburn.

The program was sponsored by the Shoals Entrepreneurial Center and Northwest Shoals Community College. The program was funded through a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
