MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A woman is dead and her grandson is fighting for his life following a drowning at a Montgomery apartment complex swimming pool.

The Montgomery Police Department confirms that Rosie Lee Arrington, 39, and her 6-year-old grandson were found unresponsive Tuesday morning.

Fire medics treated the victims at the scene on McDonough Street before both were transported to hospitals.

Arrington was pronounced dead at Jackson Hospital shortly before noon. The child, unidentified, is listed in life-threatening condition at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

The incident happened at the Courtyard CitiFlats Apartment Complex at 555 S. McDonough near downtown Montgomery. Police say there was no life guard at the pool.

An investigation by MPD does not indicate any type of evidence that would lead them to suspect foul play. Authorities believe the drowning appears to be accidental.

An investigation is ongoing. No other information is being released by authorities at this time.
