HALEYVILLE, AL (WBRC) -
Police say a 9-year-old girl drowned on Sunday night in Haleyville while trying to save her 6-year-old brother. Officers report that the children, who live in Gardendale, were visiting their grandparents in Haleyville when this happened.
The grandparents have a pond near their home and the children were playing in the water. Around 5:30 p.m., one of the boys got in some deep water. His sister, 9-year-old Brandi Odom, went underwater to save him. She rescued the boy, but Brandi did not make it out of the water.
Bear Creek Fire Chief Robert Taylor says he does not think any of the children could swim. He says this tragedy is affecting the entire community.
"I can speak for the firefighters and emergency responders. A lot of us have small kids and at the same time this little girl she gave her life to save her brother. You couldn't ask for anymore for someone to give their life to save someone else," said Chief Taylor.
FOX6 News spoke with Brandi Odom's grandfather on Monday morning. Bill Odom says the family is obviously devastated. He says the funeral will likely be Wednesday or Thursday in Gardendale. Brandi was a student at Gardendale Elementary School.
