HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Portions of US 72 were closed after a motorcyclist died in an early morning accident.
Officials responded to US 72 near Epworth Drive around 2:30 a.m. Officials said 36-year-old Charles (Dave) Burlingame was driving a motorcycle when he struck the back of a semi-trailer truck and was killed on impact.
The bike was torn to pieces in the crash.
The portion of the highway was blocked off for miles. Drivers were detoured to Maysville Road.
It is unclear whether the driver of the truck was injured or not.
Investigators said speed may have been a factor in the accident. Toxicology reports are pending.
