GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

More than a dozen cars at and around a Marshall County repair shop were broken into. One car was actually stolen and returned the next day.

It happened in the early morning hours Wednesday off Burroughs Drive in the Claysville community.

It was just after midnight when one family near the repair shop heard something outside and discovered the tool box in their truck had been broken into and items taken.

Police were called.

By the morning, officials at C&R Auto Repair discovered they had approximately 14 vehicles broken into.

Chief Jim Peterson said they are still trying to identify items that may have been stolen from those vehicles.

Peterson said a vehicle from a nearby home was also discovered stolen, so police are trying to put together clues to determine who may be responsible.

Then early Wednesday afternoon the items stolen from the toolbox of the first theft were discovered inside the stolen car that was recovered in a nearby field.

"It's not unusual for a criminal or thief to drop property, dump it, or do something of that nature with it," Peterson said. "But to have it returned basically back to the area where it was taken from, although not at the exact same spot, and within the area of where these instances took place is a little bit unusual."

Guntersville Police are processing the stolen car for evidence. Peterson said it will soon be released back to its owner.

Peterson said if anyone has any information about this crime, contact the Guntersville Police Department.
