HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Firefighters responded to several lightning related fires Monday.
A home on Jacqueline Drive caught fire around 6 p.m. Monday night.
Officials said lightning struck the house and traveled through a laptop which then caught the mattress on fire.
Firefighters said lightning fires like this are not uncommon.
"When lightning strikes your house, it finds a path to get to the ground and usually it's through your home, and it can set several fires inside your home while it's finding that path," said Fire Prevention Investigator, Dan Wilkerson.
Officials said people with multi-story homes should buy a lightning rod to direct the electricity to the ground instead of into the home.
