Graduate degrees that don't pay off

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

In a tough job market, many educators have said having a masters degree can lead to a better job opportunity, but according to a new study by Georgetown University Center of Education, there are some graduate degrees that don't pay off.

Bankrate.com lists five degrees that may not give you the boost you're looking for. A Masters in Fine Arts, Computer Engineering, PR Advertising and Mass Media, a law degree from a fourth tier school, and Atmospheric Sciences are on that list. Researchers said job opportunities in these fields are scarce or low paying. Some employers would rather hire a person with relevant work experience, opposed to having a second degree.

If you plan on taking out loans to go back to school, be realistic about prospective jobs. Experts said schools will take your money and train you for a job that doesn't exist. They said the return on the investment won't add up.

Researchers said getting a Masters degree in other areas can increase your earning by forty percent, but it varies from industry to industry.
