HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Experts have dubbed Monday "internet doomsday."

A nasty computer virus shut out tens of thousands of computers from the internet.

The FBI sent out warnings for months about the bug.

Now, anyone with the problem will have to go to a specialist for help.

Around 9 a.m. Monday, local computer stores said customers began to either contact them or bring in their computers because they thought they were infected by the bug.

Gigaparts in Huntsville said they had a handful of people contact them.

Nobody is quite sure if the computer virus is the main source of the problem because they haven't started working on those computers yet.

However, Gigaparts said it's not a stretch to believe the bug did hit in North Alabama.

The virus attacks computer's internet access and restricts users from being able to access email, websites, or other online functions.

Computer experts can't believe they're seeing the issues they are seeing with the FBI having given ample warnings to the public.

"I'm very surprised," said Ed Clifford with Gigaparts. "We really thought it was going to tail off with all the publicity it has had in the press over the last couple weeks - that you would think over the last week we'd heard the end of it."

Even though the virus did hit tens of thousands of computers, officials are saying it could have been a lot worse had hundreds of thousands of people not checked their status.
