GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A massive fire destroyed Big Marshall Recycling next to Bishop Landfill in Guntersville.

Fire crews continue to battle the blaze that broke out Friday afternoon.

No one was at the recycling center, located on Pleasant Grove Road, because it was closed for the 4th of July Holiday until July 9.

A neighbor saw smoke and called emergency crews. At least five departments responded to the scene. Heavy black smoke can be seen for miles.

Marshall County Emergency Management Agency, local law enforcement, and volunteer fire departments are all at the recycling center to help contain the fire.

A representative with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management was also called to the fire.

Several roads around it are blocked as crews work to extinguish the fire.

The recycling center has been destroyed and the fire continues to burn. Once the fire has been put out, investigators will work to determine the cause of the fire. Crews expect to be battling the blaze for many hours.

Because of the high temperatures and extreme heat of the fire, EMA officials are asking for donations of ice, Gatorade and water. To donate, you can call the EMA at 256-571-7329.
