HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Alabamians planning to buy batteries, plywood or tarpaulins to prepare for the state's next round of severe weather can do it tax free this weekend.
Beginning Friday, shoppers can save on things that can help them survive during severe weather.
Workers at the Home Depot store on South Memorial Parkway are already prepared for the pending crowds.
"Items that are $60 and below you get tax free and generators $1,000 and less is what the tax free holiday is all about," said hardware supervisor Shannon Watts.
Some of the items include things like batteries, cell phone chargers, flash lights, portable radios and more.
Watts said the tax free holiday can add up to big savings.
"Smoke detectors they are normally $27 that's a savings of $2.40. Fire extinguishers that are $19.97, you save $1.60, and it goes on from there," Watts said.
Shopper Mark Wiegmann is already looking to take advantage of the deals.
"I think that it will encourage people to be prepared in case we do have anymore storms," Wiegmann said. "Sometimes we need a reason to go, and this certainly helps to get people out and get the items that they need so if they do get into a situation, they will already be prepared."
Internet sales are not included with the sales tax holiday.
