MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The Fourth of July isn't the same without some fireworks but that didn't stop Madison police from patrolling areas to make sure neighborhoods comply with an ordinance that bans fireworks within city limits.

"Usually about the time it starts getting dark, we'll answer several calls," Officer Danny Pettus said.

Pettus said he usually responds to about a dozen or so calls for fireworks activity every Fourth of July.

The sound of firecrackers and small fireworks emerged as soon as it became dark but Pettus said it was a slow start compared to past July 4th evenings.

Residents like Rob Allem said he avoided fireworks this year because of the fire hazard.

"Normally we do in the Fourth of July but this year it's been so dry, I was just a little nervous," Allem said.

Days of hot, dry weather created ideal conditions for a potential brush fire. Fire officials issued warnings to anyone using fireworks in rural areas where dry, brittle grass or timber debris could ignite from a stray fireworks spark.

"It's more of a danger this year than any year I've seen it because of the possibility of setting a fire in someone's yard," Pettus said.

Madison police said everyone should be cautious because the risk of fire extends to neighbors.

"It can travel a great distance, so there's no telling where it could land and it could cause a fire wherever it lands," said Lt. Steve Wilkerson.

Police said patrols will go on well into the night, even after the July 4th celebrations are over.

"A lot of people think that fireworks are illegal only in the Fourth of July. They don't realize it's illegal year round," Pettus said.

Madison Police said they'll usually give a warning for those caught using fireworks the first time. Any repeat use could lead to a fine, a confiscation of those fireworks, and in some cases, arrest, according to police.

The city of Huntsville also has a ban on fireworks but they are permitted in the counties.
