HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

State troopers are ramping up for their summer driving campaign.

As the summer travel season gets underway, officers want to help keep you safe when you hit the road.

Troopers said they're using a new detection device to catch speeders. They're calling it "lie-dar detail," and drivers can expect to see troopers patrolling areas on I-565 and other highly traveled roads.

Each trooper is equipped with a "lie-dar," which is a laser system used to catch speeders.

Troopers said they will have posts set up along major highways starting Wednesday and throughout the summer.

They said they're not out to target drivers, they're out looking for aggressive speeders and hope their increased presence on Alabama's roadways will remind people to use caution behind the wheel.

"We're out here trying to encourage people to slow down and to serve as a visible reminder for people to actually slow down and wear their seatbelts," said trooper spokesman, Curtis Summerville.

Troopers said they're out there looking for a lot more than just speeding and seat belt checks. They said they're looking for a number of things like DUI and following too close.

They said you can expect to see more troopers on patrol during the summer months.

Troopers said not only do the temperatures rise in the summer, but so do tempers.

"If you find yourself in a situation where someone is aggravating you to the point you're about to lose your temper, get away from that person, slow down, listen to some music, do whatever you can to calm down," said Summerville.

Troopers said if you do plan on traveling this summer to make sure you get plenty of sleep before your drive. They said driving while sleep deprived puts not only yourself but other drivers in danger.
