LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Many of people are gearing up to spend the 4th of July on the lake but Alabama Marine Police want to remind everyone that mixing boating and drinking could land you in some serious trouble.
Marine Police suggest anyone preparing to hit the water on the 4th of July make sure you obey the laws.
Officers said every year the number one hazard is drinking and boating.
"Sometimes when people get off the roadways they think the same law as far as drinking and driving does not apply on the water and that's incorrect," said Josh Bradford, Marine Police.
Police said it's called a BUI; boating under the influence and it's a serious offense.
"You find a pattern the most time the boaters are going to be coming out and you try to not target but be in that area where most of our boaters are going to be at so you can make sure everyone has their safety equipment and can go home safely," said Office Bradford.
On the biggest boating holiday of the year, Officer Bradford said all boaters need to keep a sharp lookout and don't just assume that everybody is paying attention.
