GADSDEN, AL (WAFF) - A Etowah County rape suspect was taken into custody and charged with first degree rape over the weekend.
Etowah County Sheriff's Office worked to identify the man wanted for raping a 26-year-old woman on June 24th.
Investigators said 27-year-old Phillip Charles Browning, of Altoona, is being held in the Etowah County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond. They said the victim was able to identify him from a lineup.
Sheriff's investigators said the suspect helped the victim with car trouble when she stopped at the Jet Pep on Meighan Boulevard between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. They said he followed the victim to a home in the Tidmore Bend community and raped her.
Etowah County deputies assigned to the Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force located and took Browning into custody Friday evening.
