HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The Alabama Forestry Commission is urging those burning debris or using fireworks this Fourth of July to use extreme caution.
Hot, dry weather conditions over the past few days have parched fields into fast-burning fuel for a potential wildfire.
"The grass is so dry, it's what we call fine fuels," said North Forester Terry Ezzell.
"It's not thick-headed, wooded debris and fires will start very easy right now in the grass."
The warning applies to all outdoor burning, including cookouts and campfires.
The forestry commission recommends stirring charcoal ashes from grills thoroughly after use.
"When you're through with the grill, water it, mix the ashes, then water it again. Keep doing that until it's cool to the touch," Ezzell said.
Nighttime grilling and campfires also pose a small risk of fire, even if it is a few degrees cooler. Ezzell said brush fuel have become dry enough to withstand the rise in humidity at night.
"Fires will start and carry," Ezzell said.
Anyone planning on using fireworks is urged to soak the area with water before discharging them. The commission also recommends have a bucket of water or a hose on-hand wherever there is an active burn.
If you are in a situation where a large fire does ignite, fire officials urged you not to fight it on your own. Instead, call 911 immediately and wait in a safe place.
