HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Air conditioning units across the valley are cranked up high as temperatures soar.

AC technicians are working around the clock to fix units that have given up. Conditioned Air Solutions, a business based in Huntsville, has seen a spike in calls for repairs since the heat reached triple digits.

One technician said he had nearly six repairs lined up on Friday alone.

The most common AC problems that households encounter are dirty coils, clogged drain lines and leaking refrigerant. A typical repair job will run about $200 - $300. More complex and larger systems could range from $700 - $2,000, according to Conditioned Air Solutions.

The price may be worth it as homes prepare to endure triple-digit heat over the weekend.

Paul Snowden of Conditioned Air Solutions said households with air conditioning issues should first call a repairman and then shut off the cool air.

If the air does go out in your home, the first thing you may think to do is close your windows and doors. Technicians say to open them so that you can get air in.  Closing the windows and doors keeps the hot air inside.

Snowden said the problem could be a coil that has frozen over and overworking the system could delay repairs.

"If the system is frozen, which means the coil and the lines and everything have iced over, our technician can't work on it when they get there and it can cost you more time, more money, to thaw the system out," Snowden said.

Snowden also recommended keeping good maintenance of air conditioning systems before it has a chance to break. He said changing a unit filter regularly and keeping a steady temperature on the thermostat will prevent the system from being overworked.
